Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to some frequently asked questions about hosting:

What is a domain name and why do I need one?

A domain name is like a street address for a website. Every website has an assigned number called an IP address that you can use to visit it. But, it's hard to remember a long string of numbers and letters. So, a domain name is an easy-to-remember name that people use instead of the IP address. When you type a domain name into your web browser, the domain name system (DNS) translates it into the website's IP address so you can visit it. Having your own domain name makes you look more professional online. It helps people find you or your business easily. With a domain name, you can: (further information is missing)

How do I buy domain names?

To buy a domain you need to follow four steps. First, choose the extension of your domain name, such as .com, .org, .biz or .net. It's a good idea to get more than one extension to protect your brand name. Second, think of a name that you want to put before the dot in your domain name. You can use the business name generator to help you. Third, enter the name you want into the search box at the top of the page. We will tell you if it's available and suggest others. Finally, add your chosen domain name to your cart and check out. You will now own the domain, and no one else can use it as long as it's registered to you.

Got any tips on picking a good domain name?

  1. Reflect your brand. Ideally, your domain name should be your business name, since that's how customers will think of you.
  2. Keep it short. Shorter domain names are easier for customers to remember.
  3. Avoid numbers or hyphens. Customers might not remember to include hyphens, and if they hear your web address with a number, they won’t know if you’re using the numeral 5 or “five” spelled out. If your business name has a number in it, register both versions of the domain – one with the number and one with the number spelled out.
  4. Register more than one domain. You can help keep your name safe by registering common misspellings of your brand name. If you already own your .com domain and misspellings of that domain, consider registration for other various domain extensions, such as .org, .net, .info, etc (see our full list of available gTLDs).

How do I search for a domain name?

Simply enter the web address you want into the domain name search box. If the name you entered has already been registered, we'll provide suggestions of alternative names. If the domain is available, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the registration process.

What is domain name registration?

Getting a web address is called "domain name registration." It means you sign up to use a name like Ezhostin.com or Bigdogg.com. You don't really own the name, but you can use it as long as you pay every year. If you don't pay, someone else can use the name. To avoid this happening by accident, our company, EZ Hostin, can renew the registration automatically. For extra protection, you can add on "Ultimate Domain Protection" which lets you keep the name for another 90 days after it expires.

How long does my domain name registration last? How do I renew my domain?

Different domain extensions have varying registration periods. Most extensions let customers register for up to 10 years, but customers usually register domains for 1 to 3 years. Some premium domains and gTLDs have shorter registration periods. If you want to renew your registration, you can easily do it with EZ Hostin. You can choose to do it manually or set up auto-renewal to ensure that your website name stays registered to you.
